Inlays And Onlays In Downtown Toronto

Not every damaged tooth needs a full crown. Sometimes a filling isn’t strong enough, but a crown would remove more tooth than necessary. In these cases, an inlay or onlay can be the right balance. They’re custom-made pieces that restore strength while keeping as much of your natural tooth as possible.

What Is An Inlay?

An inlay fits inside the grooves of a tooth, similar to a large filling but stronger and more precise. It’s used when decay or damage is too big for a standard filling.

What Is An Onlay?

An onlay is like an inlay, but it also covers one or more of the tooth’s cusps (the raised points you chew with). This makes it a good option for teeth that need extra support.

The Process

Treatment usually takes two appointments. At the first visit, the decay is removed and the tooth is prepared. An impression is taken, and a temporary restoration is placed. The lab creates the custom inlay or onlay, which is then bonded at the second appointment.

Materials

Inlays and onlays are usually made from porcelain or composite resin, which blend with your natural tooth. Gold is sometimes used for strength in back teeth.
